It is a pleasure to make this report available in order to share with our audience about the situation of refugees in DRCongo. This report is being made public in a particular security situation where the territory of Rutshuru and part of Masisi are now controlled by M23 in North Kivu and this has forced thousands of refugees to run towards areas they believe are safe.
During the refugee community meeting in Goma, North Kivu- DRC
Over the years the Democratic Republic of Congo is well known for producing refugees who are hosted in other various countries but not much is said about refugees from other countries who seek asylum in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This is one among issues we want to address and we believe you will enjoy these few lines in this document.
This report intends to remind the world about the forgotten situation of refugees living in limbo and protracted situations since 1994 up to now, and our efforts are aiming at calling upon various actors to focus on these refugees and help them to live a better life now.
We continue to challenge both the ignorance, the lack of information and constructed myths surrounding refugees in DRCongo, with a desire that at least now it is possible to access some information on which various actors can base in order to do more and join the struggle.
The year 2022 witnessed positive progress on the protection of physical protection of refugees especially the improvement of the security of Rwandan Refugees in North Kivu was highly acclaimed and appreciated, despite the fact that their humanitarian situation did not change.
The year 2022 also brought us opportunities to observe challenges faced by refugees which need urgent interventions in order to address them and help refugees to live a better life.
We still regret that even in 2022 we are not yet able to know the real number of refugees and the specific situations they are living in, even though the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the Congolese National Commission for Refugees seem were working in a difficult environment, they both looked to have in place a low-profile on refugee issues.
We reiterate our convictions that the effective protection of refugees in DRCongo is possible and there are better solutions and opportunities for refugees in DRCongo which we should capitalize now.
Please accept this report and plan also to join the struggle, with you we can do better and reach out to many who are still forgotten.
